What are migraine headaches?

Migraines are a specific kind of headache, one that generally is considered the most serious and painful of all headaches. Migraine headaches typically cause major pain and frequently have other symptoms as well. When people have a migraine, they may have symptoms that are bad enough to keep them from daily activities. This results in time missed from work, inability to spend time with family and friends, and other negative changes to a patient’s quality of life.

Migraines may be very frequent for some people, while they’re quite rare for others. While the symptoms are challenging, there are solutions available. The team at ER QuickCare can help patients deal with migraines, whether they’re in the throes of a migraine or simply want to prevent future migraines.

What is an aura?

An aura is a sensory or visual disturbance that precedes a migraine. Not all people who suffer from migraines experience auras. Auras usually start an hour or less prior to the migraine. Auras can include blinking or flashing light patterns, black spots in the field of vision, or tingling in the face or hands. Auras can serve as a warning system for migraines. If people experience an aura, it’s best to come in to ER QuickCare immediately. This early response can prevent the migraine from growing out of control.

What are the symptoms of a migraine?

The symptoms of a migraine may include any or all of the following.

  • Severe pain, often on one side of the head
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to sound
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Sensitivity to some scents
  • Neck pain

How are neck pain and migraines connected?

Neck pain may appear to be unconnected to migraines, but it’s actually a common migraine symptom. In fact, problems with the neck joints, muscles, or nerves potentially can be the root cause of the migraine in some cases. Vertebrae issues such as misalignment often are connected to migraines.

What is the treatment for migraines?

At ER QuickCare, symptoms are managed quickly and efficiently. Treatment may include oral medication and IV medication, delivered right in the ER QuickCare facility. People also can begin preventive migraine treatment to help reduce the pain level, the duration, and frequency of migraines.
